»Zigeuner«, »Apachen« und »Murcianos«. Katalanismus und Konstruktion von Fremdheit in lokalen Diskursen und in der Stadtgeografie Barcelonas vor dem Spanischen Bürgerkrieg

Abstract

Der Beitrag analysiert die Konstruktion von Fremdheit in Barcelona während der Zwischenkriegszeit. Wie sich diese konkret manifestierte, wird zum einen an der Entwicklung der Stadtgeografie Barcelonas und zum anderen anhand ausgewählter Zeitungsartikel und Reportagen vor allem hinsichtlich der Frage untersucht, wie sich ethnische Fremdzuschreibungen und die Konstruktion von Fremdheit auf das Zusammenleben in der Stadt auswirkten. Dadurch arbeitet der Beitrag beispielhaft heraus, wie der Katalanismus durch die im Zuge der Arbeitsmigration entstehenden Auseinandersetzungen (re)aktiviert wurde und wie sich soziale und politische Konflikte auf die (inter)ethnischen Verhältnisse in Barcelona auswirkten.

»Gypsies«, »Apaches« and »Murcianos«. Catalanism and Constructions of Otherness in Local Discourses and in Barcelona’s Urban Geography before Spanish Civil War

This contribution analyzes the construction of ›otherness‹ in Barcelona before the Civil War. On the one hand, it focuses on the evolution of Barcelona’s urban geography and on the other hand, selected articles and reports in local newspapers are examined asking how foreignness in contrast to a local, ur-ban identity is constituted. Furthermore, this contribution elaborates on the question how Catalanism was (re)activated in the struggles caused by labor migration and how the social and political conflicts affected the (inter)eth-nical interactions in Barcelona.
